This week on THAT’S AWSM! chef Danny Smiles teams up with Sheldon, a fourteen-year-old Mohawk youth from Oka. Together they will be exploring the forest near Mont Tremblant – both from the ground and from the sky! First they do some hunting…mushroom hunting that is. Danny will show Sheldon how to create a delicious meal of their spoils, cooking over an open flame, before they head off to zip through the trees with the greatest of ease – on the longest zipline in all of Quebec! Will one of them be courageous enough to try ziplining upside down? Tune in to find out!
Ziplines were invented for a very cool reason… In the 1970s the biologist Dr. Donald Perry was deep in the rain forests of Costa Rica and while he was trying to study life he kept getting interrupted by well, life, only the kind that could kill you. So he decided to use ziplines as a way to study animal life without being eaten by it. He built observation platforms around the jungle and used polyester rope ziplines to travel between platforms. These days ziplines are used more for fun!
Check out the five ziplines at Ziptrek in Tremblant village – one of which is the longest in Quebec – for a fun and exhilarating afternoon!

What’s better than taking a ride in a Ford 1968 to go to Tremblant outside of Montreal? Going to pick some delicious mushrooms at a beautiful farm and learning to cook over a fire from a fabulous chef! Mushrooms have been used for centuries in cooking, in medicinal remedies, and have recently been propelled to the forefront in holistic medicine for their anti-oxidant properties. There are many kinds of mushrooms that can be found in the woods all across Canada, but you should never ever go mushroom picking without someone who knows what they’re doing.
Check out the farm we visited to harvest and cook these goodies!

You may recognize him from his roles on Blackstone and Delmer & Marta, or you may have heard that he’s produced a few films and web series himself, but it’s time to get to know DARCY WAITE as host of That’s AWSM! Outgoing, sporty, goofy, warm, and entertaining, Darcy is down to try any and all of our AWSM activities… unfortunately he doesn’t often get to! He can recite every single line from every Will Ferrell movie ever made, and isn’t too crazy about vegetables, but there is nothing he loves more than meeting teens from communities all over Canada and helping them live their best AWSM lives – which makes him the perfect guy for the job!

Sheldon is a fourteen year old Mohawk originally from Kanesatake. He likes to go hunting with his family, loves playing video games, and it a little bit of a risk taker who has gone cliff jumping and even let a tarantula once crawl over his body! He cares for the environment and wants people to realize they should be doing more to protect it. He has more in common with our guest this week than he realizes, he grew up with a chef for a mom and knows his way around a kitchen!

Fun factBefore becoming a chef, he toured with an indie rock band!
Celebrity chef Danny Smiles has appeared on Iron Chef Canada, was the runner-up in the third season of Top Chef Canada and is the Chef de Cuisine at Le Bremner in Montreal. He plays the drums, and is a wicked soccer player, when he’s not in the kitchen that is! He got started on his journey in the kitchen by working the dish pit at his family’s hotel, and then he was hooked… he went to Italy where he trained under Michelin-starred chefs, and also speaks Italian along with French and English. But he does have one greasy secret…he likes fast food cheeseburgers!
