On this week’s episode of THAT’S AWSM!, Algonquin youth Jennifer and Olympian short-track speed skater Charles Hamelin will test their athletic abilities on the ice and in the skies as we learn about the North American Indigenous Games, parachute safety, Mohawk Skywalkers, and what it takes to be an Olympic Champion. The average skydiving altitude is around 12,500 feet, or 3.8km and gives a freefall of about 1 minute. But some people have gone much, much higher! In 2012, Felix Baumgartner broke skydiving records, jumping from a height of 39km! Two years later, Alan Eustace jumped from an even higher altitude… 41.42 km!

Speed skating has a long history that can be traced back over 1000 years ago, when people used animal bones on their footwear to skate across frozen water.
Short track speed skating courses come in four distances: 500, 1000, 1500, and 3000, not to mention relay races! It takes place on a 111.12-metre oval track featuring tight, hard-to-maneuver corners, with side boards covered in foam mats for safety!

You may recognize him from his roles on Blackstone and Delmer & Marta, or you may have heard that he’s produced a few films and web series himself, but it’s time to get to know DARCY WAITE as host of That’s AWSM! Outgoing, sporty, goofy, warm, and entertaining, Darcy is down to try any and all of our AWSM activities… unfortunately he doesn’t often get to! He can recite every single line from every Will Ferrell movie ever made, and isn’t too crazy about vegetables, but there is nothing he loves more than meeting teens from communities all over Canada and helping them live their best AWSM lives – which makes him the perfect guy for the job!
